Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring

Teaching, advising, and mentoring are essential to my professional life. My primary teaching fields are African history and gender, sexuality, and women’s history. I regularly offer courses on the history of Africa to 1900 and Africa since 1900, East African history, Southern African history, global sexualities, the history of development in Africa, and the history of youth.

I regularly advise UG and graduate students taking history courses and working on research projects related to African history and African studies, women’s and gender history, and the history of youth. I also serve as an advisor for the history honors program, McNair Scholars Program, UCD’s Designated Emphasis in Feminist Theory & Research, and UCD’s Designated Emphasis in African American and African Studies. I have also taught the historiography and methods course (HIS 204) for incoming history graduate students.

Please see below for sample syllabi from recent courses.

History 13 - Global Sexualities

This course offers a survey of the global history of sexualities. We will investigate the theoretical concepts and constructs related to sex, sexuality, gender, marriage, and reproduction and delve into case studies on the modern history of sexualities worldwide as they intersect with the histories of slavery, imperialism, race, population control, law, and globalization.

History 115B - East Africa & the Indian Ocean World

What are the origins of cultural, political, and economic connections between East Africa and the Indian Ocean? When and how did Eastern Africans adopt Christianity and Islam? What are the legacies of slavery and European colonialism? This course investigates these and other questions about the history of human trafficking, Arab and European colonization, nationalism, genocide, religious missions, and human rights. We will address changing experiences of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, and ethnicity. This course focuses primarily on Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia, but we will also discuss neighboring countries in Africa.
